West End Healing offers private yoga classes for 1-5 people. A private yoga class is a great way to develop a home practice or to learn how to adapt group class postures to serve your individual needs. It is also ideal for individuals who have special health concerns or injuries.
Yoga means “union” – union of the body, mind and soul. The ultimate aim of this philosophy is to strike a balance between mind and body and attain self-enlightenment. To achieve this, yoga uses movement, breath, posture, relaxation and meditation in order to establish a healthy, lively and balanced approach to life. However, the choice of what yoga means to an individual is always up to them.
Although there are many styles of yoga, the differences are usually about emphasis, such as focusing on strict alignment of the body, coordination of breath and movement, holding the postures, or the flow from one posture to another. All of the styles share a common lineage.

Hatha: is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle and provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.
Vinyasa: like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term used to describe many different types of classes. Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath. A Vinyasa class will typically start with a number of Sun Salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching that's done at the end of class.
Ashtanga: is physically demanding. Participants move through a series of flows, jumping from one posture to another to build strength, flexibility and stamina. Ashtanga is not for beginners.
Kundalini: this practice is designed to awaken kundalini energy, which is stored at the base of the spine and often depicted as a coiled snake. Kundalini mixes chanting, breathing practices, and yoga exercises. The emphasis is not on asana, but rather on chanting and breathing.
Yin: most forms of Yoga practiced today are Yang, they emphasize muscular movement and contraction. By contrast Yin Yoga targets the connective tissue of the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Yin postures are held three to five minutes at a time. This type of practice complements the more muscular styles of Yoga and is a great aid for learning to sit in meditation.
